Trends in Technology

I did my Trends in Technology assignment on Generative AI. This topic interested me because it is something that is emerging and prevelent in my language arts classroom. This past week I collected essays from my middle school students that were supposed to be written using Writers' Workshop. I have AI detection in my writing program, and four students used AI to generate their essays. This is the first time my team has encountered this issue (or at least the first time we caught the culprits). We are now faced with the task of establishing an appropriate plan of action for when students use AI instead of engaging in the wrting process. We are also seeking ways we can incorporate AI into the writing process, such as by providing feedback to work generated by students. We have to move ahead with times. AI is in the forefront of technology. It is impossible to avoid it anymore.

My presentation was about the history of AI, the pros and cons of the different forms of Generative AI, and the implicaitons of AI in education. I created a PowerPoint for my presentation and recorded an audio script to accompany it. My biggest struggle for this assignment was figuring out how to submit it. I am still uncertain as to whether it was submitted correctly. I find it humorous that the submission part was what had me most stressed. I have been creating PowerPoint presentations for years, so I greatly enjoyed the confidence that I felt in the production of the presentation. I needed a victory, as everything about technology intimidates me.

On the note of becoming frustrated with tehcnology...for Valentine's Day, I did an activity with my students were we each cut out a paper heart and wrote our names in the center. We then walked around the room and wrote "power adjectives" on each person's heart that best describes the person. The guidelines were that only positive power adjectives were allowed, and the students could not write the same adjective twice. My students wrote a variety of compliments on my paper heart. Apparently I have a nice smile, a decent wardrobe (for a teacher), and I make silly jokes. The one "compliment" that made me laugh the most was "not exactly tech-savvy." I think that student missed the "positive" memo, but he was accurate in my description!

That being said, what I learned the most from the Trends in Technology assignment is that I fall into the  "Late Majority" category in regards to diffusion of innovation. I am not opposed to technology. I fear it. I get easily frustrated when a task is challenging for me. I would not describe myself as resistent. I want to learn, grow and improve. However, the idea scares me silly!! I am more than willing to adopt a new idea/trend when there is someone much more experienced that has been using the technology for a while that is willing to walk me through every step of the way (and by walk, I mean BABY steps).
